Chapter Nineteen
More dreams. More nightmares. Karak tosses and turns in his sleep, but this time he doesnât dream of when he said yes. He dreams of when another said yes.
Even though heâd been up high from the ground level, he could still hear sounds from below. A knock at the door had surprised him. He wasnât used to knocks. Or people. Putting his cup down, heâd descended the steep, spiral stairway to the base of the tower. Opening the door, Karak had stared blankly at the woman in front of him. Blue skin. Heâd nodded to himself. All right.
âIâm Olaria.â
âMm-hm.â
âI was drawn here.â
Karak had looked around them, wondering if someone was watching, if Revera was hiding somewhere. At sixteen, she was in a tricking phase, always joking with him.
âDid Revera put you up to this?â
âWhoâs Revera?â Her genuine confusion calmed but didnât remove his caution. The hungry, lustful gazes of the Tarken, however, made him grab her wrist and pull her in, shutting the door behind him.
âSo, you were drawn here, huh?â
âYes. In my dreams.â
âIâm sure you werenât happy about that. Kahzacoreâs reputation isâ¦questionable.â
âOh, is that what you call it?â
Heâd chuckled, face upward as they made their way up the stairs. âGood a word as any.â
âI was terrified, but I knew I had to come.â
âDo you know why?â Do you know why your skin is blue, for example?
âNo, but Iâm sure Iâll know once it happens.â
âSo you came to the land people most fear based on a dream and you have no idea why you had the dream or what your purpose is here?â His brow had lifted. âOkay.â
âIâm not insane.â
âI was thinking problematic, but insane is a good word,â heâd said as he opened the door to the main room, not waiting until Olaria entered first. Against whatever her culture was, most likely. Grabbing his cup, heâd sipped the wine as he studied her, the blue girl looking around the black room.
âThis is amazing.â
âMost just scream.â
Sheâd looked at him, fearful for a moment. But she never asked him why he said that. Probably a good thing.
âSo this is Marduth. The stories donât compare.â
âNot what you expected?â
âI might have been expecting a volcano filled with lava.â
Karak had smirked. âGotham drank the volcano dry. Itâs just a mountain now.â
Olaria had stared at him.
âHow are you so comfortable here?â
Sheâd shrugged. âAnythingâs better than home.â
âLet me rephrase. How are you so comfortable with me?â
Her lips had pursed. âMaybe youâre the reason I was drawn here.â
His eyes had narrowed. âHow old are you?â
âNineteen.â
âWhere are you from?â
âAsgoreth.â
âWhy is your skin blue?â
âI was born in a Pool of Light.â
âI assume from the dark patch in your soul that your life hasnât turned out so well.â
âMy mother was killed, and I was ridiculed, cast out. Being blue isnât exactly a blessing.â
Heâd nodded. âI can see that.â An eyebrow quirked to the ceiling. âInteresting.â
âWhat?â
Very interesting. âNothing.â He taken another sip of his drink. âI like your hair. Very white.â
Sheâd blushed dark blue. âThank you.â
Oh, this girl has no
